TITLE: The Power of Kawaii: Transforming students to be life-long learners

Saturday, November 21 at San Diego

Kawaii (cute) culture permeates Japanese daily lives through entertainment, clothing, food, toys, personal appearance, and mannerisms. This presentation first discusses the concept of kawaii and past and current movement of kawaii culture. Then, the presenters showcase successful kawaii projects, which created kawaii products (T-shirt for this unit) and explains how it has promoted positive affective feelings, increased attentiveness, and motivated social engagement in learning context. This presentation also introduces “Time After Time Capsule” initiated by a prominent J-pop artist. The capsules, filled with students’ personal kawaii goods, will be displayed at 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

日本の若い人たちは色々な「カワイイ 」を作りました。

1. どうして選びましたか。Why did you choose the item?
2. なにがかわいいですか。What are the criteria for each Kawaii item?
3. 他のグループのチョイスはいいですか。Do you agree with the kawaii category that other group(s) has chosen?
4. もしだめなら、どうやって変えますか。If not, how can you change the item to fit to the category (of their choice).

Teacher's reflection
- The students’ focus was high because they were so interested in the Japanese pop culture.
- It was interesting to learn the students’ perception of their term of Kawaii.
- If more time was allowed, I wanted students learn the history of Kawaii concept.

- We learned different aspects of the Japanese pop culture
- Kumatomo was so cute.
- Creating T-shirts and choosing a song were fun.
- The paint was smelly.
